What kinds of images are used on each site to support the stories?

C101 Sports & Media Exercise
Watch this video.on agenda setting and framing! Note that although the video refers primarily to these comments in relation to public policy, they can easily be extended to apply to any topic of interest to the general public or specific publics (e.g., sports fans).
Part 1
A simple, working definition of agenda setting by the media is the selection of which news stories to cover and what order of priority and emphasis to present them in.
For this part of the assignment, you will investigate differences in agenda setting across three different sports websites.
You should have 15-20 minutes to devote to taking notes and making observations of the three sites. This will be easier to do on a computer than a mobile phone. So, when you have this time to devote, open the HOMEPAGES for following three sites.
Do so AT THE SAME TIME on different tabs of a web browser:
ESPN: https://www.espn.com/
Fox Sports: https://www.foxsports.com/
BBC Sport: https://www.bbc.com/sport
Take notes on:
How each site prioritizes in the world of sports at that moment in time
Any single story that appears on the home page of only one of the sites. What type of story is it?
For a story appearing on all three sites, are there differences in how ‘big’ a story it seems?
What kinds of images are used on each site to support the stories?
These notes do not need to be turned in
Write and submit 1-2 paragraphs (at least 500 words) describing differences in how the agenda of sports news differed across the three sites.
Part 2
A simple, working definition of framing by the media is how the story is told (which elements are prioritized/excluded, which voices are heard, and how issues are discussed).
Find a single story that is covered by at least two of the sites but framed differently.
Write at least two paragraphs (approximately 200 words each) describing how the sites told the same story from a different perspective, providing examples from both sites to support your point. Be sure to put any quotations from the articles in quotation marks and cite the author/article.
Part 3
Take a look back at your notes on images. In terms of the homepages of each site, how do the visuals differ? What similarities do they share? How do these design/pictorial choices affect the reader’s overall experience of sports news?
Write a paragraph (at least 200 words) that analyzes each homepage’s visual elements by comparing them. Be sure to discuss what impact these visual choices have on the way each organization communicates sports news.
To summarize, your write-up should include the following elements:
Part 1: 1-2 paragraphs (at least 500 words) related to agenda setting
Part 2: 2 paragraphs (at least 200 words each) related to framing
Part 3: 1 paragraph (at least 200 words) addressing homepage visuals
Be sure to label each part of the assignment (Parts 1, 2 and 3) so it is clear how you are responding to the prompts.
Grading rubric:
A 10-point assignment will:
Have 4-5 paragraphs labeled and written in complete sentences
Each paragraph responds fully and thoughtfully to all the questions
Considers similarities and differences across the three sites
Demonstrates understanding of agenda setting and framing
Provides relevant examples, with quotations when appropriate, and proper citation
