Public officials can be called upon at any time to deliver a message to the public. If you want a career with a public-facing role, you must be prepared for the possibility of public speaking. In this assignment, you’ll practice your public speaking skills by preparing a video of a statement and mock press conference that would be appropriate for use on television, radio, or social media.

Scenario: You are the new officer assigned as the police department’s public information officer (PIO). You work for a small to mid-sized metropolitan police agency. Until this point in time, your agency has never had a large incident with public concern and outcry. Recently, however, the agency is facing a situation that will require you to address the public directly to calm tensions.

For this assignment’s topic, choose a situation that you might face in your area or in your future career that could lead to widespread public concern. You may base this assignment on a real-life incident or a fictional one.

Respond to the situation in 1 of the following ways:

Law Enforcement Response – Explain how and why law enforcement is responding to the incident.
Community Program – Provide information about a new school or community program resulting from the incident.
City Services – Prepare the public for changes to city services because of the incident.
Public Policy – Explain a proposed policy change due to the incident and how to participate in voting on it in the upcoming election.
Event – Persuade the public to support an upcoming event that has been organized in response to the incident.
Prepare a 250- to 350-word script to use when recording yourself in a 2- to 3-minute video (Keep it within 2- 3 Minutes) of a mock press conference of your response.

Include the following in your script and video:

Part 1: A 1- to 2-minute planned statement in the form of a public service announcement or news release that includes a summary of the incident.
Part 2: Responses to at least 4 questions that reporters might ask about this incident including these 3, plus at least 1 of your own:
What precautions has the agency taken to reduce cultural bias in their communications about this incident?
How is the department using technology and social media to inform the public?
How does the department plan to improve its communication with the public going forward?

Your script as a Microsoft word document
Note: You can use any App that can be easily viewed to create a short video and upload it with the Script. You can also try Microsoft Stream to upload a video file but you must create a full link to submit for your assignment. With Stream, it maybe easier to download the video, correctly name it and upload it as the links do not always work. I need to be able to view a video and see the script. Stream is available through your Microsoft Office 365 account as a University of Phoenix student. Go to Microsoft Stream and sign in with your school credentials, or open the Microsoft 365 App launcher icon, select All apps, and then select Stream to access the application and view tutorials on how to use it.
