Dear All,
Please submit your research papers along with two annotations by November 20th.
The following are the expectations for the assignment:
1) Make sure you are formatting your papers on the basis of the APA guidelines (see the following: https://library.senecacollege.ca/apa)
2) Your papers ought to be around 1000 words
3) Have five paragraphs: Your opening paragraph contains your thesis statement towards the end and prior to that a hook (that could be an interesting quotation, statistical piece of information, an intriguing anecdote, etc) and a contextualization of your paper (i.e. put your topic in context by providing a background and an overview of the topic); three body paragraphs: each body paragraph starts with a topic sentence that sets the tone of the paragraph (that topic sentences have to have a direct bearing on the thesis statement), and finally there is the conclusion which need not be allocated to a wrap up and ideally could offer a nunaced perspective by asking an intriguing question and adding another layer of interpretation to the text
4) Make sure your paper is coherent, original and narrowed down in scope
5) While the topic is open, please make sure you do not choose a controversial topic (i.e. abortion, religious themes, and anything that may hurt certain people’s sentiments) and have a narrowed down scope. You may choose to analyze a book,a film, an ad, and a historical event through a gender- or race-specific theoretical framework.
7) Have four scholarly sources (two of which you will be annotating). You may conduct a library search and filter your searches by only looking for “peer-reviewed” sources.
8) For your annotations, go through the following steps: a) provide the APA referencing details, b) comment on the credibility of the source by alluding to the reputation of the journal you are citing from or the author’s whose work you will be using, c) provide a summary of your source and d) provide a rationale for your choice: Why is it that you have chosen to use that particular source over others in the field? In other words, how will that source assist you in your research? Please be specific as to why that source is useful to you.
9) As always, proper spelling and observing the conventions of grammar and syntax matter!
Please note that publications such as The Globe and Mail, The New York Time, The Newyorker, Washington Post, The Toronto Star… as reputable as they are, are NOT scholarly sources!
While you are supposed to be using four scholarly sources, once you have used the four scholarly sources, you may go on to cite non-scholarly sources, if you wish.
The due date of your assignment is Friday, November 19th.
