Document Analysis 2

For this assignment, we’re going to focus on news and PR coverage and writing. 
Step 1: You’re looking for three pairs of articles here. You want to find an announcement or event that has been published in a news outlet and as a press release on a company website/account. Each pair of articles should be on a different topic / use a different company or business.
For example, the White House does this all the time: the WH releases a statement and then a news outlet writes up a story about it. It also happens for lots of other companies or businesses; their account makes a statement and someone writes a story about it. You can find these pairs in a number of different ways: you might try starting with the news outlets and seeing if they cite a statement or press release, or you might start with the company website then search to see if there’s been an article written about it.
Step 2: On your document, write out the headlines and links for all three pairs of articles.
For each pair of articles, complete the following and answer the questions:

1. Look at the two headlines covering the same event. What are the main differences between them? Why do you think these headlines are different (e.g., why would each author choose something different)?
2. Read the headlines and first two sentences of each event. How does each article grab a reader’s attention? How do they communicate all the key info (Who, What, When, Where, etc.)? What are the main differences in the first two sentences between each article?
3. Read each article all the way through. What are the main differences between these articles? What did the article from the news outlet add that wasn’t present in the company’s article? Why do you think they made these additions?
4. Who do you think (describe in a few general terms) the key audiences were for the company and the news outlet? Give 2 specific examples from each article where the authors made a choice (e.g., language, tone, a new perspective, information) that specifically catered to their target audience?
5. In terms of writing in an objective and formal way, compare and contrast the two articles. Did the company article feel the same, more, or less objective or formal than the news article?
6. What goals for publishing the information did each outlet (e.g., the company, the news) have? Did they accomplish those goals? How were these goals different?
