Discussion 1_Moore postCOLLAPSE Question 1: Firing a gun into the air. Suppose a bullet is fired straight upwards andthat it leaves the barrel of the gun at 200 m/s. Neglecting air resistance, how fast willit be going when it comes down? What will happen to a person who happens to bewhere the bullet comes down?This question would require someone to utilize the average speed conversion to determine howfast the bullet would descend.The conversion for speed is: 1 m/s = 2.24 mph200 m/s x 2.24 = 448 MPH that the round would be coming down and accelerating if there wasno air resistance impacting the speed. As such, anyone who happened to get hit with the bullet atthis speed can be severely injured depending on where the bullet hit the person. Question 5: Is the egg raw or hard boiled? Suppose there’s an egg in yourrefrigerator but you don’t remember whether you boiled it or not. You could trybreaking it, but that’s a messy and not very useful way to do it. What other methodcan you think of to determine if the egg is raw or hard boiled? Hint: ConsiderNewton’s Laws of Motion. A raw egg contains a soft yolk floating around in a liquid.If you suddenly impart a motion to the shell, will the insides pick up the motionquickly? Can anything “slosh around” inside a hard-boiled egg?As a trained chef I love this question. I have been asked this question many times by students ofmine. There are many ways to determine if an egg is raw or hard boiled. First, I would considerthe spin method. If the egg wobbles, the egg is raw. An egg that is hard boiled will spin betterthan a raw egg making it difficult to spin because of the yolk. A raw yolk will make the eggwobble because of the fluid it contains. Another way to determine if the egg is raw or hardboiled is put it in hot water. A raw egg will have bubbles coming from it. In retrospect the eggbeing hard boiled and cook inside will not have bubble coming from the egg being in hot water.Understand the centripetal force of the egg and addressing Newtons Laws of motion, thespinning of the egg will give a better assessment of the eggs cooked status. Question 9: State Newton’s second law of motion and give an example of what itmeans.Newtons second law of motion states an object is accelerated whenever a net external forceacts on it. The net force equals the objects mass times its acceleration. (Ostdiek & Bord, p. 53).A good example of this is something Im greatly familiar with. Car crashes are the perfectexample of Newtons second law of motion. During a car crash, there is a force between theobject and the car.
