Suggested Outline for Pro-Con essays:
 
Introduction:
1.      Background: What is your topic? Why is this topicimportant? Why is it controversial?
2.      Summarize the position you disagree with first.
3.      Summarize your own position second, stating broadlywhy you disagree with the other position. Note: Keep this order consistentthroughout your essay. If your position is Pro, begin with Con; if Con, beginwith Pro.
4.      State thesis. Note: Your thesis must be a clearstatement of opinion. Avoid the kind of meaningless thesis that that says thesetwo things are similar but different. You need to point to some significantdifference or similarity between the things you are comparing-contrasting.    
 
Main Body:  Each main body paragraph should address oneof your main points. You can write as many main body paragraphs as you want.You are not limited to three. Each main body paragraph should:
1.      Begin with a topic sentence introducing a main bodyparagraph point
2.      Summarize the argument you disagree with first. Useresearch (quotes, paraphrases), or logical arguments, or real-world or personalexamples. Make sure to summarize the opposing position fairly.
3.      Summarize your own argument second, using research(quotes, paraphrases), or logical arguments, or real-world or personalexamples.
4.      Use transitions between Pro and Con arguments. Forexample, however, on the other hand, etc.
5.      Reinforce your thesis in every main body paragraph.
 
Conclusion:
1.      Challenge the reader to rethink hisor her position or to take direct action.
2.      Look to the future or pose questions:i.e. what will happen if we do or do not adopt the position you have adopted?
3.      Conclude with a relevant quotation.
4.      Any combination of the above.
