I would just like to see how you can discuss TWO different stories and organize an interesting essay.
The directions:
1. MLA format with nice margins. Double space. You can drop the essay into the portal when it is posted or you can attach a file.
2. Start with an introduction that explains the two stories you will be discussing.
3 Your main body paragraphs should contain your actual discussions regarding whatever organization/topics you choose. This can be a rather “free form” discussion, if you like.
4. Make a point with your sharing of the two works. Discuss how the author’s personal life may have influenced or affected the story. Example: We raised the possibility with “An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge” that Ambrose Bierce may have actually witnessed a spy execution in real life. How might THAT have affected his writing of the story? (This is just a simple example of things you might discuss.)
5. Feel free to do a little searching on your own to discover MORE about the background of the story authors that you select. (No citations required)
6. You can use comparisons, contrasts, discussions of similar themes, discussions of author similarities, etc. This is all up to you!
7. Don’t forget to discuss your likes and dislikes of the authors/stories, although it would be unusual to discuss much in the “dislikes” category since you are selecting two of your FAVORITES.
8. Have fun. Write. Think. Discuss. Relax.
STORIES:
“An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce. Civil War narrative about an executed spy’s dream escape.
“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Victorian woman is confined to her upstairs room for depression. The cure for women is different from men.
“Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. Another Victorian woman writer expresses plight of women and dependence upon husbands for livelihood. Quite a surprise ending when “dead” husband returns!
“All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. Very popular 20th Century sci-fi writer tells a tale of the cruelty of children and an important event “missed” on Venus.
“To Build a Fire” by Jack London. Famous early 20th Century adventure writer spins a tale of a man vs. nature story and includes the interesting addition of a dog who is travelling with him.
