I have been trying to practice source reduction and recyling both at home and at work. At work we have been completeing several projects that have involved the need to dispose of soil from our tank farms. In the past, the majority of this soil was being disposed of as petroleum impacted or hazardous simply because it was inside a tank farm. This was a very coslty way to dispose of the soil. After talking to our environemtnal professional we were given permission to send soil samples to a lab for analysis. The results came back as non-hazardous. In fact, the soil was better quality than most peoples’ yards. As a result we were able to use the soil elsewhere in the facility for projects instead of disposing of it as waste. An example of reycling at my work is sending oily rags and used oil to an energy recovery facility. The materials are burned to produce energy. An example of source reduction I have been practicing at home is to use reusable water bottles instead of single use ones. The recyling facility in my town does not reccyle clear plastics, so they dispose of most water bottles in the landfill.
