A master thesis introduction section for the topic: Acute effects of a) physical and b) mental fatigue on balance and cognitive performance under dual-task conditions. The rationale behind the study: Postural control is known to be impaired by physical fatigue (eg training). There are indications, however, that fatigue-related performance losses in postural control can be compensated for by increased vigilance. At the same time, mental fatigue has an impact on cognitive performance, but the effects on postural control seem to occur mainly in older adults, but less so in young adults. In addition, it is reported that both mental and physical fatigue, especially when performing dual tasks (eg standing quietly in a one-legged stance and calculating backwards), cause acute impairments of the static and dynamic equilibrium.
