Admissions Statement

In writing this personal statement, through my resume, and previous places of employment, I realize that I probably sound like the standard, stereotypical law school applicant. I want to assure you that I am not. Unfortunately, I come from a family of lawyers. Everyone in my immediate family attended some law school, and most became practicing attorneys. As a result, there are rarely quiet moments at family gatherings. I was not pushed to become a lawyer at any point in my life and was even discouraged from the profession of law, especially at said family gatherings. As a child, I spent many days and nights in my parents law office, where I swore to myself and my parents, who held eight-year-old me, hostage at the office, that I would never do anything related to law. Then, at 18 years old, I made my first big mistake. I landed my first real job as a process server, and unbeknownst to me, this is where my intrigue with the law began. In the following months, I started learning how to serve notices and read the laws to ensure that I followed all the laws and completed service correctly. Not long after I started serving, I started my own business, District Process Serving, which I have run successfully and thoroughly enjoyed for the past four years. When I started this job, I promised myself it was just going to be a short-term gig, a way to make some money for the weekends, and a way to have a steady income without having to work the standard 9 to 5 while I found my real career. Then, about a year ago, it hit me, I am a graduating Senior from George Mason University with a degree in Government and minors in Psychology and Business. Yet, I had no interest in any of those three fields. What I love doing is getting up in the morning and connecting with people, hearing updates about cases I was working on, following up, and learning more about tenants cases. In serving landlord/tenant cases, I learned a lot about the importance of legal nuance. Still, when I started serving different notices, particularly those over family disputes, I found these cases fascinating. The more I looked, the more I realized that I kept coming to the same conclusion, I want to get more involved with the law. So, here I am a year after graduating from my undergraduate program, trying to start something new, change the direction of where life was headed, and find what my purpose is here in this world. They say everybody has a calling, and as much as I hate to admit it, and as much as I want to hide from it, and as much as I want a stray from what my family has done, I feel that I would be unfulfilled doing anything else. There are very few other professions that offer you the opportunity to assist, firsthand, in creating justice between parties, especially those who have been wronged. As I said, law school is something I never thought I would pursue and even swore I wouldnt do yet. I have never been as excited to start something new as I am now. I feel a legal education from insert school here can help me achieve my goal of positively affecting peoples lives in a way that matters. I ask you to please consider my application and help me reach my goal.
