all drains

You’ve spent the last two weeks learning about the biodiversity of the Los Angeles River and the threats that our waterways face from trash and water pollution. For this assignment, you will be focusing on the trash in your neighborhood. The data that you collect will be used by the Council for Watershed Health to better understand the extent of trash and to identify trash hotspots.
Assignment Requirements
Step 1: Complete your trash survey
Use the  to complete your trash survey. You can use either a web browser or the ArcGIS Survey123 field app to enter your data, but I recommend using the web browser. As you are completing your survey, you will need to take a picture of at least two pieces of trash that you see. If you didn’t see any piece of trash it’s ok too. NO trash is still data!
Before going into the field, watch the CWH’s video tutorial (below) on how to collect the correct starting and stopping points for the survey

Remember that honestly and accurately inputting your data is crucial to the work of the Council for Watershed Health. If you are still unsure about any part of the data collection process, please revisit the SoftChalk. If you can’t find the answer to your question there, please send me a Canvas message.
Step 2: Submit pictures of two pieces of trash
Submit pictures of any two pieces of trash that you saw on your survey. How did you classify each piece of trash? Be specific and include the category as specified on ArcGIS123. (For example, if you identified it as plastic, did you classify it as bag pieces, balloons, hard plastic pieces, soft plastic, etc.?)
NB. If you didn’t see any pieces of trash it’s ok too. NO trash is still data! In this case you can submit two pictures of the gutter and storm drain to asses the type of trash capture device (if any) in your neighborhood!
Step 3: Answer the discussion questions
To summarize the results of your trash assessment, answer the questions below. Your answers will help the Council for Watershed Health to identify potential sources of trash in your area and to formulate targeted pollution control strategies.

What do you think are the top two root causes of the trash in your area? Explain your reasoning. If you choose ‘other,’ please elaborate. If you didn’t see any pieces of trash what are the possible reasons?

Homeowners not maintaining their property
Vacant properties
Littering
Illegal dumping
Multi-unit building not having enough trash cans
Lack of public trash cans
Other

What category of trash was the most common on your street?
Where do you think this trash is coming from? Be specific and refer to nearby landmarks/activities that could be contributing to trash in your area. Is the trash primarily food wrappers, fast food waste, home waste, construction waste, liquor, or some other type?
An important part of the Council for Watershed Health’s mission is educating communities about how and why to restore local watersheds. Besides a reduction in water pollution, what would be two potential benefits for the neighborhood if pollution mitigation efforts and waste prevention programs were put into place?
