Position Argument
Assignment
Choose
a local, national or international issue and take a position on this issue after you have researched the subject; be
sure to use credible (academic) sources of information. Write a 4-5 page
(1250-1500 word) Position Argument
presenting your stance (i.e. your point of view) on this issue.
Your
essay needs to include a thesis or “focusing” statement that would address why
the issue is controversial and why you consider it to be important. You are
required to critically examine your own experiences in relation to the issue
you are writing about. Thus your own personal
narratives, combined with academic research, must illuminate the significance
of the issue (as well as your positions on it) for your readers.
The
majority of your argument should be concerned with supporting your claim/position and the reasons your give in support of your
claim. Make sure your claim is arguable, relevant, and well focused. Both your claim
and your reasons must be backed with reliable evidence: facts, statistics, scholarship, expert opinion, as well
as your on personal opinions and experiences.
You
also must include sections addressing opposing
views, followed by a refutation (counterarguments)
where you explain why certain opposing positions are weak or irrational and why
your positions are stronger, more rational. The best way to refute your
opponents’ positions is to examine and contest the facts and assumptions on
which they are based. You also can make
some concessions, if you are unable
to refute certain opposing arguments.
Essays
must be written in MLA style and must
include a minimum of five research
sources. Read MLA Style Guide.
