Argumentative essay on why community college should be free in the United States

Research and write an argumentative essay that demonstrates both valid academic research and growth in your writing skill.  For this essay, you will be able to select your own topic as long as it is a topic that can be academically researched.  Overworked or generally popular topics would not be acceptable.  Begin with a research question to direct your search for information. Keep in mind that until you complete your research, you wont be able to answer your research question; this means you will not be able to set your thesis until your research enables you to discover the answer to this question. You need 
to be open to adjusting your thesis and your initial ideas about your topic based on the academic research. 
This assignment is all about critical analysis of the evidence. You are taking evidence from a variety of sources, integrating that evidence, and analyzing its validity, compiling information in order to devise reasonable conclusions. In all types of problem solving, critical analysis is the key. 
The Role of Personal Viewpoints
Your personal preferences and personal opinions will have no role in the conclusions drawn through academic research.  Recognize and acknowledge your personal views for what they are:  personal views based on experiences that may not represent mainstream views or flow from valid research.  You may include a short summary of your personal viewpoint, but in the analysis of your topic, your personal view must be put into perspective.  It is the view of only one person.  What you learn here about basing conclusions on results can be applied to any setting, whether or not it is in a written format. 
 
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS
 

1250 to 1750 of words in the discussion with either MLA or APA formatting, depending on your major

Be aware of your targeted audience 

Be clearly organized

Include an effective introduction that sets up the tone and purpose of the essay.

Have a thesis/claim (the what you are saying and the why you are saying it)

Use critical thinking/analysis to go beyond the surface of the topic to show readers the significance of the topic

Integrate your sources using either direct quote, summary, or paraphrase with proper in-text citation

Include a References or Works Cited page

Minimum of 5 Sources
