Assignment

In this assignment, you will conduct a multiple regressionanalysis. You will be using data for the year 2019 for each of the 50 states. Therewill be one dependent variable (it should represent a violent crime: chooseeither murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, or aggravatedassault)   These data are viewed in  the UCR, Table 5.
 
You should use data representing social and economicproblems for each of your three independent variables, (for example, poverty,unemployment, and school dropout). You will not find data for all threevariables in the same document, nor will they always report state level data inalphabetical order like the UCR does but sometimes from highest to lowest, suchas the Food Research and Action Center’s poverty data in Table 1 of their 2019publication.
 
Instructions for Using SPSS
1. cClick on Icon for SPSS 23.
2. Go to Variable View. Enter the name of  each of your independent variables, one at atime, in the upper left corner.
3. Enter the name of your dependent variable in the fourthbox down from the top in the upper left corner.
4. Click on Data View
Type in your data for your independent and each of your dependentvariables-50 cases.
5. Then go to Analyze and click on Regression (Linear)
6.Click on the names of each of your variables so theyappear in the box to the right
7. Click ok. The test should run
 
In entering yourdata, make sure that: 1) in entering your data for both your independent anddependent variables, have the 50 states arranged in the same order (forexample, alphabetically; Alabama first, then Alaska, and so on) because somedata are retrieved from alphabetical lists and other data are retrieved byclicking on a state in a map of the United States and 2) make sure you enterdata for the same jurisdictions for all four variables; for example, ifDistrict of Columbia and/or Puerto Rico data are entered for one variable, theyshould be also entered for all of the other variables.
 
Report your results.  
 
Theresult you should look at first is the level of significance. Find it byreading across the line that says Sig. and you will come to a decimal pointfollowed by three numbers; this value can range from .000 to .999. If thenumber ranges from, and includes, anything from .000 to .049, there is arelationship between the independent and dependent variables and you reject thenull hypothesis. If the number ranges from, and includes, .050 to .999, thereis no relationship between the independent and dependent variables and you donot reject the null hypothesis.
 
Theresult you should look at next is the table entitled Coefficients. Report if any of your independent variables aresignificant predictors of your dependent variable and why.
