Bilingual language development

Based on your understanding of the articles by Romaine (1999) and Bialystok (2012), and additional videos, web resources, and your own research on bilingualism, please address the following issues in your discussion posts on bilingual language development:

describe different types of bilingualism and the advantages and problems of different types of bilingual education programs. You may review the history of bilingual education in the US and discuss reasons that bilingual education was not supported in the past and English-only was advocated. Or you can discuss why certain bilingual education programs are more successful than others.
discuss the advantages of bilingualism with supporting evidence from research on bilingualism.

You may also include comments on what new knowledge you have gained through the readings and videos or relate to your personal experiences of teaching or parenting. Please cite published studies as evidence to support your arguments.

Address at least 2 specific points from the readings or the forum topic prompt. (2 points)

Relation of new information to old information learned in the course to date. (2 points)

Relation of information in article or reading to personal experience. (2 points)

Discussion at a critical level, not just recitation of facts from the readings or topic prompt. (6 points)

Length of posting approximately 250 words. (1 point)
Written responses are free of grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.  The style of writing facilitates communication. (1 point)

Note: Discussion at a critical level means discussing things such as your opinion of the point mentioned, why you hold that opinion, what you see wrong with the point mentioned, how you see the point consistent/inconsistent with what you have learned so far, implications for the future, consistencies/inconsistencies within the article or reading itself, and so forth. In other words, critiquing a study means analyzing the good and/or bad aspects of the study and justifying your analysis or opinion. Do not just tell me what a reading states…I already know this.
