Case Vignette 1: Real Men

Read the following two Case Vignettes
Complete the questions (do not rewrite the questions, numbering is acceptable) using APA format.

 
Case 1:
Richard C. is an upper-income man working in financial services, says he was attacked 50-60 times by his wife in their 14 years together, most of the time while she was drinking: A lot of times, I would be working on some papers and there would be a coffee cup there, and she would intentionally spill the coffee; she went from that to throwing the cup and the coffee. She would throw hot, scalding coffee in my face. It was a gradual thing that build over a three-year period, until it got to the point where she would physically strike meShe would physically attack me, tear the glasses off, kick me in the testicles five, six, seven timesYou couldnt control her. A couple of times, I would wrestle her to the ground, pin her arms around her, and wrap my legs around her, and tell her to calm down, calm down. Shed say, Okay, Im calm now, Im under control now. And youd let her go, and shes be right back at you, doing it again.
 
Case 2:
Jake T., a six-foot-tall construction worker, married three years to a woman who was five-feet, three-inches: I think a lot of her problems had to do with the drug use. I mean, I could never tell when she might come unglued. It would happen all of a sudden, usually in the bedroom. For example, one night I was sitting on the side of the bed, taking off my shoes, and she just came at me, kicking and swinging, no warning, nothin. Just bang, she starts in. Thats the way it was with her. She would never say why. One time, she did throw a knife at me; it missed. But most of the time, she would hit me with her fists and kick. Id just either hold her arms, or put up my arms, and then leave, till she had a chance to settle down.
 
Using the text, class discussion, and video to answer the following questions*:

Do you consider the cases provided to be intimate partner violence situations? Explain why or why not?
The video discusses the influence of media on societal expectations of the way men should perceive themselves and behave.

How do these two situations conflict with those societal perceptions of the way men should present themselves?
Are there problems that are unique to husbands? Explain what those might be or why there are none.
Are there problems that abused husbands may never experience but abused wives would?
What barriers do you think these men would face if they were to contact the police?
What about if they attempted to seek IPV intervention services?

What similarities do these cases share with those experienced by women? Differences?
Consider these cases again, but reverse the roles of the abuser and victim. Do you now view the cases as more, less, or equally abusive? Explain your answer.
