Contemporary issues in art

In this discussion post you are going to discuss one issue that impacts the world of Global Art History and around which there is some controversy. It can come from the point of view from the artist, art historian, museum, nation, peoples but the issue must be presented with BOTH sides of the argument. This discussion must focus on NON Western art.
Examples might be reparation, restitution, feminism/gender, Native identity, art out of context in museums, separation of cultures in museums, the art market overall, appropriation, assimilation, tourist art, terms such as “traditional art”…

You may write about individual artists IF their art specifically addresses a contentious issue but don’t make it an artist biography.

Be wary of broad statements and ideas: for example “all artwork in Western museums should be returned to the countries that made the art.” Well, you’re not going to prove that. Some of the art was acquired legitimately, and in 2 pages you won’t have space to go into the nuances of the issue. However, if you say “the xxx” sculpture should be returned to xxx country, then you can research the history, acquisition, and efforts around a specific work of art. This is more likely to get a good grade then unsupported, sweeping statements.
This post should demonstrate the latest news on whatever object you choose. So –

History of the controversy/issue/artwork
Tell us a bit about the art itself
What you’re arguing
What the opposition is arguing
What, if anything, is happening to resolve this controversy/issue
Why you care

Requirements:Minimum of 4 paragraphs, however it can be longer if you need that to clearly lay out the argument. You must be succinct, however, or you will lose points ( don’t write 5 paragraphs about the background of the controversy/art, compress it into a couple of sentences)
Provide art work if necessary for discussion
You must research the issue thoroughly and provide scholarly sources (minimum of 4). This means you should investigate the author of the piece- are they qualified to be talking about this? Whose opinion art you citing?
As always, you must cite your sources (in text AND works cited pages).  If you fail to properly cite sources, you will not get better than a D on the paper
