Overview

Read the following scenario:

Patricia, a 77 year-old African-American female, has been admitted to the hospital for a hip replacement. She is single, is a retired computer programmer, lives independently in her own ranch-style home, and is very active. She participates in swimming and aerobics classes several times each week, and attends the symphony, cooks, travels with friends and family, attends the local Baptist church a few times a year, and is an avid reader. Her only health issue has been osteoporosis, for which she has taken medication for about 3 years. She has one daughter who lives 20 minutes away, although she is often traveling for her job. In the last few months, Patricia has had to curtail her aerobics classes as the pain in her hip became acute. She is 5’4″ and weighs 125 pounds, takes Benadryl to help her to sleep at night, drinks 1-2 glasses of wine each evening, has a cat, and does not like to ask anyone for help. She is worried about how she will manage after the hip replacement.

Briefly outline how you would plan Patricia’s care based on your nursing diagnoses.
Include relevant members of the healthcare team who may be involved in Patricia’s care.
Identify what patient teaching Patricia might need. Keep in mind the physical changes in the older adult, as well as psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual considerations as you plan your care.
