Definition Essay
Write a 500-750 word essay using definition as the chief method of development.
Use your own thoughts, observations, and/or experiences as the sources for this essay. Research is NOT required or expected for this essay.

For this essay, you will define what makes a movie or television show “good.”  You will need to set forth the criteria you use to judge.  Unlike the evaluative essay, you will not be presenting a single example of a good movie or television show and explaining why it is good. Instead, you will be letting your audience know, in general, what you “good” means when you are talking about movies or television shows.  What are looking for when you decide whether you enjoy a movie or television show?  You may name specific movies or shows as specific examples in your essay, but your focus throughout the essay should be the criteria you use to define “good” when you are discussing movies or television shows.  Letting your audience know your criteria is almost like training your Amazon.com “recommended” list or your YouTube “recommended” list: you are giving your readers enough information to recommend a movie or television show to you and be confident that you would enjoy that movie or television show.

Brainstorm for topics.
Accumulate as many details as you can about your topic, and then sift through them, discarding those that are irrelevant, weak, or unrelated to the impression you would like to convey.
Organize your ideas.
Use vivid language and varied sentence structure.
You are writing nonfiction. Thus, it is understood that your definition is not a universal one and that others have their own criteria.
Include a formal alphanumeric outline with at least three levels of organization for the body paragraphs after the title but before the essay itself.
Titles of movies and television shows are italicized as well as capitalized. Do not use quotation marks to set off titles of these types of works.

Writing Approach
In this essay assignment, your goal should be to establish what your definition is clearly enough for readers to determine whether a movie or television show would be “good” by your criteria rather than their own.  Provide your readers with an understanding of your criteria by naming specific examples of movies or television shows that do or do not fit the criteria you choose to discuss. You do not need to persuade everyone to have the same definition of “good” you do, only to understand what you mean by the term when you say a movie or television show is good. In any case, be aware of your audience (your classmates) and your tone, which should be relatively formal although first-person pronouns are acceptable. Your choice of words may greatly influence your reader’s impression of your topic. Be careful to present your topic as you would like it to be interpreted.
