Let’s discuss the FTC in more detail. What is their background and role?

Signed as a law in 1914 as part of an administration trust busting program, federal trade commission is a federal agency that enforces antitrust laws and protects consumers. The purpose of FCT is to protect consumers and promote legal competition. They achieve the two mission by stopping unfair, fraudulent and deceptive practices in the market place as well as developing rules that ensures a vibrant market and educate consumers and business about the same rules. FTC endeavors to maintain an open and free market place by stopping anticompetitive mergers and business practices that could harm consumers as a result of high prices, low quality or few choices to choose from. 
It is key for business owners to be educated on the FTC practices in order to understand their rights and their legal responsibility (Ward, 2021). As it is said, ignorance is not a defense in law, so the same applies, business are supposed to learn the FTC laws in order to abide in the same and when broken they become answerable. 
Deceptive advertising is an example of a deceptive practice that FTC fights against. According to FTC, deceptive advertising occurs when it is going to mislead consumers or it is material (Federal Trade Commission, 2019). A material advertisement is one that is important to the decision made by the consumer to buy the product. For example, an advertisement that claims something that is untrue would be a deceptive advertisement. A toilet cleaner may have an advertisement stating that the detergent cures diseases brought about by unhygienic toilets. The claim is deceptive because what the detergent does is that it kills germs that cause the diseases but not curing the same.
Cases of deceptive advertisement if found guilty would suffer monetary penalties in relation to the magnitude of their mistakes and has decided by the court of law (Bonsu, 2020).
