In this week’s lecture, all the different fungal parasite is fascinating to learn, and especially, for me, the Septobasidium. The basidiospores germinate on the insect and it accumulates plants and has a mouth that extends down to the plant tissue to suck out sap from the tissue, it is like drinking through a straw from the sugar solution that is in the vain of the plants. They do not kill the host scales but do cause some harm, and they are hard to find and is more common in the tropics and their features protect them from predators. Different than the Septobasidium, the endophytic fungi live in the internal tissues of the living plants. Instead of causing harm or taking over the host scales, they can actually benefit the plants. It is also very interesting to see how fungus kind of “interact” with the termites and ants. It is new to learn how the leaf cutter ants cultivated the fungi on the leaf and bring them back as a food source.
