In the course of the school year, an IEP committee member or a parent can decide there is a need for partial adjustments that might not need an entire IEPmeeting. If there are slight or limited changes to a particular service, carrying out amendments without waiting to conduct a meeting could be a great way to ratify the change hurriedly. For instance, a new school year or a semester might signify that the goals or services require tweaking to function in a unique setting. The mentioned amendments may not need a consultation with the whole ARD committee (Partners Resource Network, 2019). On the other hand, an exchange between the parent and a speech therapist could reveal that the student requires a new language or speech goal. Then the language therapist and the parent could reach a consensus of a proper goal without consulting the rest of the ARD committee.
In these scenarios, the district and the parent could agree to the changes in IEP without calling a meeting of the whole team. The process could of great significance if all parties agree to the proposed changes, and thus it does not require entire committee discussion. However, the circumstances that an IEP could be changed without conducting a meeting are limited. For example, an IEP might not be changed without having a meeting when the proposed changes warrant the school psychologist’s participation in the IEP team or when the changes affect the recommendation of the students program. If the parent fails to understand the changes, or there is no agreement to the changes or fails to respond to the request made to the changes, the changes would warrant an entire IEP team meeting (Partners Resource Network, 2019). But when there is an agreement by the parent to the changes and Waiver of IEP Meeting is signed, returned to amend the IEP, the team makes the changes to the IEP.
