Discussion One: Icons and Iconography

For this discussion, read this article:  The Mystery of Symbols in Art (Links to an external site.).  Then go to ArtStor (you can also try to find an image which shows the subject in Google Image search) and search for images covering one of the following topics (after you log in as shown in the video, simply go to the ArtStor home page, and search in the search box any of the following phrases or names). The images you use must be made between 200 CE and 700 CE, either Late Antique, Early Christian, or Byzantine. No earlier and no later, and no other cultures.

Identify one work that shows the scene you have selected. Download the image so you can include it in your Discussion post (at the top, please.  For instructions on how to use ArtStor, see the video in the “Required Stuff” module.  For instructions on how to include an image in your discussion post, see the “How To…” Module.) Then, in three paragraphs, do the following:
1) Describe the scene or object, thoroughly. This should be at least four sentences or so, dealing with objects you see, figures, colors, and composition. You should identify all the items within the work, including objects, landscape, clothing, etc.  This should be between 150 and 200 words.
2) Explain what the objects symbolize. This will likely require research (which must be cited), and should be between 250 and 300 words.
3) Connect the symbolic meaning with the message contained in the image. This should be about 100 – 250 words.

Please remember that you will likely need citations and a bibliography.
