The_ total_ process_ took_ approximately_ 70_
hours._ The_ project_ team_ held_ an_
afternoon_meeting_with_those_involved_in_the_process,_and_the_results_of_this_brainstorming

session_produced_the_cause-and-effect_diagram_shown_in_Figure_5.8._This_was_then_used_
to_identify_opportunities_for_improving_the_process._For_example,_the_analysis_revealed_
that_jobs_arriving_inwards_at_9.00_am_might_not_be_put_into_the_system_until_5.00_pm_
because_ the_operator_would_undertake_ the_computer_inputting_in_one_go_at_
the_end_

of_ the_ day._ This_
resulted_ in_manufacturing_ not_ having_
visibility_ of_ the_ updated_ order_ book_
until_ 9.00_ am_ the_following_morning._
This_ was_ easily_ addressed_ by_ combining_
the_booking-in_process_with_the_goods_inwards_process,_removing_a_further_lead_time._
Figure_5.9_depicts_the_re-engineering_process.
The_simple_actions_undertaken_by_the_company_resulted_in_the_total_process_taking_
37_ hours._ This_ led_ to_ a_ more_
responsive_ service_ being_ offered_ to_ its_
customers_ and_ therefore_to_increased_business.
