to self-educate by engaging in research;
to explore the etymology of words and phrases. Etymology is defined as “the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.”
to explore the why and how of the words/phrases origins and their social, cultural and political contexts.
to explore the similarities and difference with other words phrases, and/or to explain why they are similar/different.

Language is as ubiquitous to the human animal as is the act of breathing. We communicate “auditorily” by sounds made with our lips and tongues, and visually, through written symbols that conform to agreed upon rules (grammar).
Living languages, in this case english, adapt to cultural and regional needs. Sometimes, these adaptations create “private language” in the forms of slang or unique phraseology, which is more often generation-based.

THE ESSAY
Choose one from the list of words and phrases below. If you want to choose other words/phrases that relate directly to your word, then that’s okay. Write an essay that does the following:

What is the CAUSE and/or EFFECT of this word/phrase in American society, both literally but more importantly connotatively (Level 13)?
How does the word/phrase COMPARE and/or CONTRAST with other words, either formal words/phrases or more colloquial words/phrases? Is it accepted by the general population? Is it for a more specific segment of society? Does it have a negative or positive connotation? Why?

NOTE: again, the above bullet points are NOT questions to answer, but questions that should create in you connotative curiosity.
THE LIST:

She woke up and chose violence- referring to someone (not specifically a girl) who is savage or brutally honest
Cis- Referring to someone who isnt transgender.
Karen- typically, although with many exceptions, a middle-to-senior aged white woman who acts shockingly entitled and childish in public
The quiet kid- refers to a high school student who is socially awkward and is thought to be more likely to perform a school shooting.
Cancelled- A social phenomenon of people being held accountable for their actions.
Ghost call- when someone disrespectfully calls your phone, usually via facetime, without any warning.
Triggered upset; used to minimize the feelings someone is having when you disagree.
SJW a person who fights for political correctness at an extreme degree
Michael Jackson- self explanatory
Sheep a very original political insult that claims you dont think for yourself, just follow the herd.
toxic masculinity a phrase that refers to negative traits associate with masculinity
Woke: Someone who is aware of social issues and accommodates them. Conservatives use this as an insult

Snowflake: Someone who is overly sensitive. Conservatives use this as an insult.

Based: Someone who speaks the truth about certain topics without worrying about being politically correct.

Libtard: Shorthand for liberal retard. Another conservative insult (there sure are a lot of these).

ACAB: All cops are bad, or alternatively all cops are bastards. Became popular during the protests resulting from the death of George Floyd.

Fake news: A term used by conservatives to discredit the media.

Politically correct/PC culture: A culture of self-censoring speech in order to not offend or upset anyone.

Cancel culture: The act of cancelling or no longer supporting a person because of their words or actions. Conservatives see this as an attack on free speech.

Antivaxx: Someone who is against vaccinations.

Trigger: To upset someone by showing or discussing something that is traumatic for them.

Lit: the meaning of something really exciting and fun

 
Bussin: Something that tastes or is really good food

 
Sheesh: The new way of saying omg or wow, mostly used by generation Z

*pointing their fingers to their upper arm vein* : commonly used by younger generations to refer to the fact that they have ice in their veins to reference how cool they are.

Ken: Just like karen but for a male

Bones Day: When it is a day that means to show love to yourself, for example buy yourself that bag you’ve been wanting, basically self love and treating yourself. This is from a pug on tik tok named noodles.

No Bones day: So when noodles doesnt get up it is referred to as no bones day which means no hard pants, stay in bed, be kind to yourself. Again this is all on tik tok and went viral a month ago

Weeb: a person who is into the japanese lifestyle but is non-Japanese. These individuals love the cuisines and the anime shows and all around Japanese culture. 

Drip: Nice clothes thats are stylish

Woke af- extreme version of woke
Black lives matter- network to bring justice and freedom
Snowflake: A person who gets offended easily and their tolerance is very fragile like a snowflake.

Toxic- negative

Cancel Culture: The concept of canceling or shaming a person, usually a public figure for offending a larger group using hateful actions, speech, etc.

Adulting- Being responsible and making the right decision.

Low-key- something that is being down is secret.

Shook- Being surprised, shocked or even scared

Lit- Something that is exciting or good.

Stay woke- Understanding what is around

Gucci great or excellent

Lit something with high-energy

Cap fake or a lie
Sus suspicious or shady

Savage someone who speaks on something and doesnt care what other people say
“Throwing shadows” is another example of LGBTQ+ slang being adopted by the wider culture. This means insulting someone in a, particularly clever or subtle way.
Fire simply means cool, trendy, awesometake your pick of superlative adjectives. Its most commonly used to describe two paragons of youth culture: music and clothing.
Keep It 100 refers to authenticity. If someone is keeping it 100, theyre being true to themselves and following their dreams. If you ask someone a question and warn them to keep it 100, youre asking them to tell the truth.
Peanut Gallery- a group of people judging someone
Okay Boomer- Someone who is out of touch or close mind on modern society is today.
Snowflake- someone that is too sensitive
Triggered – someone that disagree with a topic
