Begin with Berry’s essay as a way to frame your discussion. Payparticular attention to Berry’s two questions and how he interprets texts. Moveon to Levine’s lecture for a biblical scholar’s perspective on Jesus.
Matthew chapters 5 – 7 are Jesus’s “Sermon on theMount,” the longest and most specific account of his ethics in the NewTestament. A parallel version, known as the “Sermon on the Plain,” isfound in Luke chapter 6. The SOM worksheet is worth a look.
Jesus’s “Parable of the Good Samaritan” is found inLuke chapter 10. This is one of the most influential of Jesus’s texts and it isthe subject of much reflection. Read the essays of King, Levine, and Rule asexamples of how the parable has been interpreted in the past and provide yourown interpretation of the text.
The assignment calls for you to critically interpret and analyzethe ethics of Jesus. As this is the academic study of religion, focuson what the text says and what kind of ethical stance Jesuscalls his disciples to embrace. Your personal beliefs, or lack thereof, shouldbe only an intangible part of your response.
