Patients were seen as fellow human beings who suffered from a curable disorder, rather than as being in a state that was somehow less than human.
You could argue that moral treatment was not itself a significant innovation. You might argue that it was only really used as an excuse for the building of asylums on a large scale. This led to the mass institutionalisation of those labelled as suffering from mental illness, who were locked up in underfunded, overcrowded asylums. The asylums gave significant power to the new medical profession of psychiatry, and this was an important step in the medicalisation of mental health and illness. Some would argue that this has not been helpful.
