Extreme Weather in the News

Extreme weather phenomena often make the news.  What causes these events to happen and how are they reported?  For this discussion, you will be researching news articles to find an event that happened within the past six months.  The weather event can be tornadoes, extreme storms, extreme high or low temperature events, hurricanes, or floods.
1. Find a local or national news article posted within the last six months on extreme weather event.
2. In your initial post, write a one paragraph summary of the event, damage caused (if any) as well as an explanation of the cause.  Next, answer the following question: Is this article scientific fact-based reporting or editorial opinion? Explain your answer.  
3. Include a link to the article in your initial post.

Discussion Guidelines
Some modules have a Discussion generally relating to the chapter(s). You will be required to follow the tasks asked of you, and answer questions when done. You will have to do outside research to answer these questions fully. The resources you use must be cited using APA. In order to earn the full credit (100 points) for each Discussion, you will need to make AT LEAST ONE significant contribution (your initial post), and AT LEAST TWO thoughtful contributions to other students’ posts (replies to other students). Your initial contribution/post (significant) must be more than 100 words and must occur BEFORE you can read any other student responses. Your thoughtful contributions/replies to two other students’ posts must be AT LEAST 30 WORDS.
Points will be taken off if you do not address or answer all of the questions/tasks being asked of you. Grammar and spelling count. Small errors may be overlooked; large errors may cost you points. Type your responses in a word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word) before, and then copy/paste to the Discussion to help limit any errors.
I know some of these topics may be politically charged, and may touch a nerve or two along the way. Please know my job is NOT to teach you WHAT to think…but to make YOU think. I will expect you to remain civil to your classmates at all times, yes, even when you disagree.
You will use outside resources and they must be cited (APA is the most common citation used by colleges and universities). Please note, I will not countour textbook or Wikipedia (DO NOT CITE WIKIPEDIA!!! IT IS NOT A CREDIBLE SOURCE) as an outside reference.
Grading Guidelines
50 points – For initial post on topic, answering all questions, in at least 100 words
40 points – For replies to two students’ posts, thoughtful responses, in at least 30 words each
10 points – For citations, grammar, and spelling
