For your thesis statement, make sure to identify the work, make a claim about what is being communicated on a deeper level by the author, and include the points of support you’ll be discussing in the paper.
For the claim in your thesis statement, make sure to be specific—have a clear, insightful point. Avoid being vague or making a surface or plot level statement.  If you only refer to the work’s message, without explicitly stating what it is, or say that literary devices are being used to improve the story, you won’t have a clear, insightful claim, only a vague or surface level statement.
For your topic sentences, identify the point of support you’ll be discussing in the paragraph and reference your claim.
Make sure your title is informative or creative, rather than just a label. 

Short story titles should be in quotation marks or italicized.

In a work of fiction, the narrator and the author are not the same person. 

Only use an author’s first and last name or last name, never just his or her first name.
Remember to introduce any quotes with a small introductory phrase or be connecting it to the sentence before with a colon.
Remember to cite any quoted material with an MLA in-text citation.

For an MLA citation, no comma is needed between the author’s name and the page number.

For an MLA citation, make sure to capitalize the author’s name and put a period after the citation.

For a citation at the end of a sentence, only the period after the citation is needed, not one before in the quotation too.

Make sure to indent your paragraphs five spaces or by using the TAB button.

A paragraph should only have one main point. 
A well-developed paragraph should be about a half a page long.
Tone refers to the author’s attitude toward the subject matter, not a character’s perspective.  

When analyzing literature, remember to use present tense when referring to events in the text.

After each individual plot point mentioned, make sure to offer some analysis, tell the reader why this plot point is relevant, before moving on to the next one. If you have multiple plot points in a row without analysis in between, you’ve slipped into summary.
