RESEARCH:
As mentioned in the lecture, in 1989 Francis Fukuyama argued that liberal democracy was triumphant and revolutions were obsolete. After reading the selection from his essay, and at least two of the other three articles/podcasts, your assignment is to:
Complete a web search to see if there have been any revolutions in the 21st century. Be sure to distinguish between revolutions, civil wars, revolts, and riots. We are looking for POLITICAL revolutions that have been successful. We are not looking for cultural revolutions, scientific revolutions, or revolutionary social movements (Black Lives Matter for example).
Be careful about the sources that you choose in your web search. If you do not use high quality sources you will not receive full credit.
Remember Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. Wikipedia can be a good starting point, but you must then verify the information on reliable academic or news websites.
Websites like “Toptenz or Ranker” are also not reliable sources. They are not written by academics or journalists. Their lists were written by freelance writers who were paid $50 per list. Here are the credentials of the author of the “Top 10 Most Notable Revolutions:”
WRITE:
Write (Paragraph 1 of 2): Briefly describe what you found in your web search. Have there been political revolutions since 2000? And if so, where and when did they occur? Why do they constitute revolutions? Be sure to include specific details about the revolution you choose. Do not just list names of revolutions. Also, do not include technological, scientific or cultural revolutions. These are not the subject of the Fukuyama essay.
Use citations (see note below)
Strong responses will use the knowledge gained from the lectures to judge whether or not a chosen event qualifies as a revolution
Write (Paragraph 2 of 2): Agree or disagree with Francis Fukuyama’s original argument based on your findings. Is liberal democracy triumphant?
Citations
For this assignment you need both in-text citations AND a works cited. The works cited is for the sources that you found on your own.
Lectures, Readings and Podcasts in order from above:
(Malkin-Fontecchio, “What is a Revolution?, Time Stamp or Slide #); (Malkin-Fontecchio, “What Makes a Revolution Possible?, Time Stamp or Slide #); (Malkin-Fontecchio, “Historical Thinking,” Time Stamp or Slide #); (Fukuyama, 1989); (Glaser, 2014, page number); (Tharoor, 2017, page number); (Inskeep and Martin, 2017, time stamp).
CITATIONS FOR YOUR INDEPENDENT RESEARCH: Your citation should look like this: Firstname Lastname, Title of Web Page, Publishing Organization or Name of Website in Italics, publication date and/or access date if available, URL. If you are missing some of the information (for example an author), you can omit it.
Failure to use citation (in-text and works cited) will result in a grade deduction on the assignment (see rubric). If you dont need citations, you havent included any specific evidence from our course materials or your research.
