This final post is ONLY for those who submitted the autobiography selection assignment. If this is not you, complete one of the choices listed under option two.
In a letter to either Malcolm X or Elaine Brown, explain why you identified the three themes you did as pivotal. Provide examples, with citations, from their text to support your position. Be sure to avoid saturating your letter with quotes. Paraphrase as much as possible. Remember, they know what they wrote. In your dialogue with these social justice revolutionaries, use specifics to address why, in the 21st century, you envision their autobiography as an enduring legacy. Finally, share how you understand their unceasing efforts to empower humanity as a template for your own activist life (even if you think you aren’t one). After Mr. X and Ms. Brown have read your letters, they should know you read their books carefully and feel eager to respond.
The body of your letter should be 600-words.
This is the autobiography that I wrote to Malcome
I have selected “The Autobiography of Malcom X” which outlines Haley’s interview with Malcolm X in 1963. The one-on-one dialogue between the two provided an ideal platform for Malcolm X to air his thoughts on the struggle for civil rights, his experiences as a Black Muslim and what he thinks should be done to achieve equality between the white and black races. Several themes arise during the interview, including racism and religion. Racism is the book’s primary theme. Malcolm’s relationship with racism begins in his childhood when he observes and then accepts racism’s effect on his family. Later, he develops a strong sense of self-respect and admiration for all black people. Eventually, he believes that all black people can establish a strong brotherhood between themselves. He believes that the blacks need to fight and resist the US’s racial prejudice and oppression system because it is a stumbling block to the brotherhood he envisions. The interview also reveals Malcolm’s unceasing struggle to locate a religion that will enable him to flourish intellectually and spiritually. Despite being a son to a Christian minister, he admitted that he found it challenging to embrace Christian beliefs. During his incarceration, Malcolm X studied the roots of religion and embraced Islam. He even becomes a Muslim preacher and makes several strong arguments against Christianity. According to Malcolm X, the white man used Christianity to justify imperialism and the psychological and physical oppression of black people. Essentially, Malcolm X believed that white people used Christianity to rationalize racism against blacks and destroy the black’s self-image. His controversial arguments against Christianity did not rub well with black Christian leaders who expressed their outrage at his slander of their religion. Malcolm X responded to the leader’s criticism by contending that they, too, had been brainwashed by Christianity’s forgiveness value.
