Is public schooling a success? This question invites you to discuss the reason(s) public schooling was established, the function it serves and/or the impact it has. Clearly explain the measure by which you will judge the success of public schooling. Consider its roles in society in shaping, replicating and changing society. To what extent do their dream and reality of publicly-funded schooling align or differ? Tips for writing your essay 
1. Answer the question posed. Do more than simply describe the various positions held on a particular topic. Take and defend a position by developing an argument.
2. Narrow your focus as much as possible. When developing your thesis, make sure that it focuses on a specific aspect of the broader issue discussed. For example, if discussing the impact of COVID-19 on education, it is difficult to provide sufficient depth for a discussion of mental health, funding and poverty. Likewise, it is better to the impact of the issue or phenomena you are discussing on one or two stakeholders (and go in-depth) rather than briefly mentioning multiple stakeholders or their generalized importance. 
3. Support your claims. Provide evidence (data, statistics, studies) that support the claims you are making. While personal experiences are meaningful, providing evidence from reputable sources demonstrates that the phenomenon is widespread. 
4. Guide your reader. The formatting of your essay is supposed to make your writing accessible. Avoid compound or run-on sentences. Use paragraphs to demarcate ideas and transition sentences to connect ideas both with each other and the overall argument.
5. Synthesize ideas. Use direct quotes sparingly. Direct quotes should be used when the direct wording is difficult to summarise or explain or when the idea might be controversial, and a direct quote serves as proof that the author or speaker actually held that belief.
6.Be realistic in your suggestions. For example, it is tempting to propose general or vague solutions such as the need for more resources. Without specifics as to the source of funding and acknowledgement that budgets are constrained among competing needs (e.g. health care, infrastructure, social services, etc.), any proposals appear unrealistic or untenable.
