doing career counseling with some of his clients. You know that social workers
rarely, if ever, get specific training in career counseling (e.g., on theories

doing career counseling with some of his clients. You know that social workers

2. A human services professional is working with an African
American client on career development issues and tells you that she thinks the
client is making excuses for not finding a job. The client, she says, insists
that there is little upward mobility for a lower-class, undereducated, Black
client. Is there any truth to what the client says? Would you say anything to
this human service professional? Is she acting ethically? Professionally?

3. A human services professional continues to use
gender-specific language when referring to certain occupations (e.g., fireman
rather than firefighter). In addition, he tends to push girls toward
traditionally female occupations and boys toward traditionally male
occupations. When you mention that he might want to change his language and
ways of acting with the students, he responds, This is how the world is. Why
should I give them a false image? What should you do? Is he acting ethically?
Professionally?

4. A human services professional insists on having students
make career decisions despite the fact that developmentally, they should be
exploring their strengths and weaknesses and examining the different kinds of
occupations in the world of work. How should you approach this situation? Is
