Leadership Management: Journal Assignment

Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to self-reflect and process chapter seven learning.

Skills:   As a result of completing this assignment, you will practice self-assessment, reflection, and self-expression through journaling.
Knowledge:   Students will review course content; practice using a conflict assessment and learn more about themselves and the organization.
Please follow the “Formatting Journal Assignment” carefully and format your assignment properly. 

Task:  
In order to complete this assignment, you will execute the following.
Task 1
Watch TedX How to build (and rebuild) trust (Video Length 15:06)

Answer the following questions:

Think about the Triangle of Trust. Where does trust wobble for you? (Authenticity, Logic, or Empathy) Explain.
Where, when, and with whom are you likely to be distracted? What distracts you?
How does Dr. Freis lesson on authenticity speak to you?
When you are a manager, how might you use the lesson on the communication (start with the idea) triangle?

Task 2
Base on “Self-Assessment 11.1”, answer the following questions:

Do you agree with your highest score? What does it say about you?
What are some of the strengths/weaknesses of that style?
Under what circumstances might you want to alter your preferred style to one of the others?
How will this information help you be a better employee and a better manager?

Task 3
Watch the scene from The Odd Couple; answer the following questions:

What is the basis of the latent conflict? 
What behavior is the manifest conflict? 
What conflict reduction method did they uses?
What are your personal reactions?

The Odd Couple

Introduction:
Divorced Oscar Madison lets his about-to-become divorced best friend Felix Ungar move into his eight-room New York apartment.  They are entirely mismatched.  Oscar is disorganized and sloppy.  Felix has parts of his life in control and is tidy.  Many interactions center on the Friday night poker game with their circle of friends.  This delightfully funny film traces their interaction as Felix gets closer to his divorce and Oscar yearns to live along again.
There are two set of scenes at different points in the film.  These scenes offer separate character studies of Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar.

Scene 1: Start (0:08:) Stop (0:20:46) 12 minutes
Oscar Madison:  This sequence, which follows the opening credits on Felixs despondent, evening stroll, starts as the camera zooms to an apartment building and cuts to Murry shuffling cards.  The sequence ends after Oscar says to Murray, Can you imagine getting a thing like that?  She even has to tip the kid a quarter.  The film cuts to a shot of Felix leaving an elevator.

Scene 2: Start (0:46:19) Stop (0:51:16) 5 minutes
Felix Ungar: This sequence starts as a police car arrives at the apartment and drops off Murray for the Friday night poker game.  They end after Murray and Vinnie leave the apartment with Vinnie saying, Some life those playboys got.
