The Social Dilemma Assignment
Objective: In this assignment, you will be exposed to many writing strategies: summarizing, evaluating,
synthesizing, analyzing and categorizing the topic of social dilemma. You will also learn how to
collaborate effectively with the team members to distribute tasks.

Instructions for task #2:
Follow the step-by-step process to produce a final product.
Step 1. – Step 4. Read through these instruction steps carefully, then begin step 5.

Step 5.
Before you begin, know the general message you to convey, the purpose, and the audience.
Task #2: Synthesizing the articles
Synthesizing simply means combining. Instead of summarizing the main points of each source in turn, you put together the ideas and findings of multiple sources in order to make an overall point. At the most basic level, this involves looking for similarities and differences between your sources. Synthesizing takes the process of summarizing one step further. Instead of just restating the important points from text, synthesizing involves combining ideas and allowing an evolving understanding of text. Your theory must be debatable and in question form.

Your reader must have a logical explanation for each bullet as you walk them through the synthetization process. Work with each article individually and the image above answering the bullets; therefore, you must have 6 paragraphs per article—then see tip to combine paragraphs or leave standing alone. Use your quotes from the annotation as evidence to prove your point. Utilize the template for clarification.

Look at the results. Combine your efforts. In one final paragraph, include the answer to the following questions: What did you understand about each article? Why was this the case? Was there a prevalent idea that might have changed your mind after your read the articles? What was it? It there wasn’t one, why was this the case? Finally, what was the message you wanted to convey? Length of text: 4 pages minimum, no maximum Connections: Then make connections between the texts, lecture notes, and textbook (Length: 1 page).
• What are some similarities?
• What are some differences?
• What claims do the author’s make and do you agree with them? Do you agree with some or all or none? Why or why not? Explain your logic. Provide evidence.
• Do they all share the same concept about social dilemma? Why or why not?
• What is fake news? Do you think about this differently than just a phrase you might have thrown around in the past?
• What is “motivated cognition” and “cognition control”? How are these phrases used in an academic sense in connection to each author’s claims?
• Discuss a recurring theme that crosses the articles.
*Allow time for proofreading. Check grammar and punctuation. MLA format. *Do not forget that images need to be included in both sections: task and connections. Format correctly. *Your essay, to be precise, MUST be based exclusively on relevant quotations from specific readings we had from each of the authors. No quote, no credit. No baloney gleaned from other sources or generalizations, etc. etc. etc. Be careful there. You may paraphrase from our readings, of course, and adapt the quote to the topic as necessary.
Note: This is an essay that you are turning in for a grade. I will look for creativity—did you include
images? Are these images inserted correctly? Did you thoroughly work with the idea/task given? Did you
provide evidence in the form of quotes, in-text citations, and a Works Cited section? Is the essay properly
formatted by MLA style standards?
