Norberg Globalization of Capitalism

R​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍​ead Chapters 10 and 11 in Weinstein, the article for the week, and then watch Johan Norberg’s video below. A Cliff Notes version of the film is that the world is an unequal and unjust place, in which some are born into wealth and some into hunger and misery. Norberg takes his viewers to Taiwan, Vietnam, Kenya, and Brussels to see the impact of globalization, and the consequences of its absence. He makes the case that the problem in the world is not too much capitalism, globalization, and multinationals, but too little. Consider Norberg’s premise in light of what Weinstein has to say in Chapter 10 about the modern world system where global inequality is the norm.
 Weinstein notes in Chapters 10 and 11 that the key defining feature of the modern world-system is capitalism. From a world-systems perspective, wealthy and powerful national states in the core exploit and dominate less powerful and poorer regions in the non-core. In so doing they legitimize violence and have produced a new kind of imperialism where on the one hand core nations support decolonization and on the other, they fight wars to​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍​ prevent the emergence of regimes that are deemed threatening to their interests. The colonial empires are gone, but not imperialism. The question for you to consider in this forum then is . . . Can the globalization of capitalism actually do what Norberg suggests when there are so many different players or will it merely continue the dominance of the core countries?
