Thinking about what you are doing and why you are doing it is what turnsyour experiences into meaningful learning. Background: In an article entitled, What Do Nurses Really Do?, authorSuzanne Gordon (2006) wrote:
Several weeks ago, I was invitedto speak to a group of undergraduate students who had been asked to read my newbook, Nursing Against the Odds, for their history of science class atHarvard University. During the hour-and-a-half discussion, one question thatkept popping up was: “What do nurses really do?” As I left the room,I pondered, as I often do, why the public has so little under-standing of theconsequential nature of nursing practice. Clearly, it’s because of traditionalstereotypes about nursing. But it’s also because nurses have been socialized tobe silent about their work or to talk about it in ways that fail to reversethese traditional stereotypes. Gordon, S. (2006).What do nurses really do? Topics in Advanced Practice Nursing eJournal, 6(1).
