The Reading & Discussion Circle invites you to take a deep dive into an applied reading related to social advocacy communication and specific themes from our current unit. You are asked to complete the assigned reading (see info below, also attached to this assignment description), compose 3-4 questions for our in-class discussion, and critically reflect on the reading with a brief response to the prompt below. Our first Reading & Discussion Circle topic is Environmental Justice as Intersectional Equity, we will hold the in-class discussion Thursday, October 7. Read all instructions carefully.
Guidelines for completing this assignment:
1. Please read the article, “Touring Cancer Alley, Louisiana: Performances of Community and Memory for Environmental Justice” by Phaedra Pezzullo. A PDF is located under the Readings folder and also attached to this assignment.
2. You are encouraged to read actively- mark up the article, make notes, jot down questions or thoughts you have as you digest the case study. This will help you engage in the discussion in class.
3. Come to the in-class discussion (Thurs. 10/7) with 3-4 questions based on the reading and its connection to course concepts. The goal of these questions is to stimulate robust discussion of the reading. Strive to go beyond asking comprehension questions like “what is X section about.” If you do not understand something in the reading, try to specify what is causing your confusion (is it an unfamiliar theoretical word, or argument the author makes?) and use that to pose a question. You may also pose questions that critique the author’s claims or other elements of the case study.
4. Include your discussion questions in your submission for this assignment. In addition, compose a 1-page response to the following prompt: How does a “toxic tour” leverage intersectionality to advance social advocacy?
Your response should draw on specific detail from the reading as well as concepts/ideas covered so far in our course.
5. Your submission should be approximately 1.5 double-spaced pages, using 12-point Times New Roman font and with 1″ margins on all sides. Place your name in the file name you upload to Bb rather than waste space at the top of your paper. Please submit MS Word docs or PDFs only. Responses are due by 11:59pm on Friday, October 8 on Blackboard. No late or emailed papers will be accepted.
