Reefer Madness Essay/Reflection
Guidelines
Movie
Reflection/Analysis
These
writing assignments are intended to require you to engage in logical reasoning
and
critical
thinking, as well as develop your written communication skills.
As
stated, we will watch movies in this course. These films were chosen to show
how
particular
aspects of the criminal justice system are portrayed in film, including
prisons,
police,
crime causation, and aspects of the court system.
Each
Reaction/Critique Essay should include these two parts: Your Reaction and your
Critique.
Your Reaction (review) may
be to focus on a particular character, relationship, scene as it
related
to you personally and/or your experiences and knowledge. While you are watching
the
movies, think about the following questions:
• How do you feel about what you are
watching?
• What do you agree or disagree with?
• Can you identify with the movie or characters
in the movie?
• How do you evaluate the situation
in general?
• What did you find interesting about
the movie?
• Did it help you get an historical
sense of the period it depicts, and if so how?
Your Critique (HINT: This is a GREAT
place to use the articles we provided or one you found) should
explain how well the film portrayed the criminal justice system,
criminals,
victims, or criminology. While you are watching the movies, think about the
following
questions:
• In what ways does the film accurately
portray the aspect of criminal justice it depicts,
in your opinion?
• In what ways does the movie fall
short of recreating the aspect of criminal justice?
What would you have done differently?
• If you did not know anything about
the criminal justice system, how would this
movie (good or bad) affect your
perceptions about the criminal justice system,
criminal justice practitioners, crime
victims, or criminology?
Your
Reaction/Critique Essay must meet the following criteria:
•
2 – 4 pages in length
•
Do not use first person language (I, Me,
We, etc) in the critique.
•
Double-space, APA approved font and size
(ex. 12 point New Times Roman)
•
Microsoft Word (.doc or docx format)
•
Cover and Reference Page, doesn’t count in
length requirement (APA format- See the Essay Template)
•
You should identify the movie’s title, and
director.
•
You
need to include at least two outside sources in your critique.
Remember to back your thoughts with published works.
•
In-text citations (APA)
•
Proofread carefully: grammar, spelling,
mechanics, citations.
•
Must be uploaded to MyHeritage. If there
is a problem with MyHeritage you may email to instructor
•
Avoid too much plot summary. Do not simply
retell the story.
Here
are a few techniques that can help avoid retelling the story:
• Write a brief thesis. Focus on a
central theme or a major character
• Limit your plot summary to a single
short paragraph
• Stress the topic sentences in your
paragraphs
NOTE:
This is an upper division criminal justice course/CRMJ 450. If you are not
familiar
with
some of the criminal justice terms/ideologies, you will need to do some
research on
your
own. I have included “Helpful Criminal Justice Terms for CRMJ 450.” If you have
taken Criminology and
Intro to Criminal Justice, many of these terms will be familiar.
Introduction
This
should be a paragraph, 3-5 sentences, which you introduce your topic and lay
out the framework of what your essay will be about. Your essay should be 12-point Times Roman
Font, with the current margin settings and double spaced. Feel free to use this as a template for your
essays.
Body: Give This A Title
The
body is 3-5 paragraphs about your topic.
State an introductory sentence, provide information (two to five
sentences) and then a summation sentence (one sentence). Each paragraph is 3-5
sentences. Make sure you properly reference your materials you are using to
write your essay in text. For example,
if I am writing about puppies and I use a book by John Miles and it was written
in 2007 I can reference it in two ways. I can say something like “According to
Miles (2007) puppies are fluffy” or “Puppies are fluffy (Miles, 2007). I am
also using my own words and not using direct quotes. Remember that when you are writing, the
reader wants to know your own words, not someone else’s, so always put the
material in your own words and DO NOT use quotes. NOTE: Please review the
Reefer Madness Reflection Guidelines sheet. You will be addressing the topics –
Your Reflection and Your Critique.
If
you have questions about how to cite sources, please ask me (plagiarism is a
serious thing and I take it seriously, so please ask if you need help) or look
it up online. Here are some websites you can use to learn about how to cite
sources: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html
and https://scholar.google.com/intl/en/scholar/citations.html and
https://library.hccs.edu/brtutorial/mc19
or your word document will have references help.
Conclusion
Explain and sum up what you have
already told me. Again this is a paragraph
for minimum of three sentences, but no more than five.
