Argument on a Debatable Issue
Take on an important topic in the news or something you have studied in a college class that reasonable people disagree on, take a stand and form an opinion on this issue, and argue your point of view. Make sure to choose a topic that reasonable and informed people disagree on in roughly percentages of 50/50 (ie, dont choose an easy or soft issue that is easily argued and won). General topics to consider might include: environmental issues, government policies, educational reform, a community issue where you live, an issue here at the college, or national healthcare.

Exploratory Search
Consider a topic important to you, or important to us as a community or nation, and further inform yourself on all of the important aspects and sides of this issue. Perhaps, for example, you would like to explore one of the issues above but do not want to take an argumentative stance on the issue. Or, another option would be to do a search on a topic of serious importance to you such as a future degree option or career.

Here are just a few argumentative topics among the millions that exist out there:

The US government must limit the production and sale of GMO foods
College Divison 1 athletes should be paid to play their sport
The Town of Brookhaven needs to develop a more substantial recycling program for households
The educational system should abolish Regents courses and diplomas
All businesses with over 100 employees must offer a state-approved childcare facility on site

And, some exploratory topics:

ADHD medication for children, the pros and cons
Options for effective recycling in a community
Exploring the career requirements to become a registered nurse

Requirements:

Length: Minimum 1500 words of writing (approximately six pages, not including the Works Cited page)
Format: MLA (for overall format, parenthetical references within the paper, and for the Works Cited page at the end)
Required Sources: at least five separate sources (“Sources” here refers to specific and different outside sources where you gather information and research, which might include books, journal articles, interviews, surveys, etc.)
