How to complete the RRJ 
Reading Response Journals (RRJs) are an informal space for you to explore the readings as well as your own reading process. The first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. Do not stress too much over each entry – the “dress code” is casual. Your thoughts, the response and reflections, are important! At the beginning, you might feel overwhelmed, but the more you write, the easier it will get.
Each week, each RRJs should include the following: (ONE RRJ for the two chapters)
1. You will notice that each chapter starts with a brief intro (usually on a separate page without a title). Take your time reading it carefully. Ask yourself: what is the main idea, what is the main point? Write a 1-2 sentences brief: what is the main point, focus on the lesson of the intro.
2. After the intro, each chapter incorporates a story from Trevor Noah’s childhood. As you are reading, ask how the intro is connected with /illustrated by Noah’s story. Write a brief summary of the chapters including major events, characters, and important information about setting (place and time). The summary should be in your own words no longer than 5-8 sentences.
3. Your response to the reading. This is where you need to dig deeper and think critically. Choose 1-2 Golden Lines from the story and share your opinion: your reaction with the reading. Maybe you have had a similar experience, maybe you disagree with the author’s commentary, maybe you can draw differences between his and your experiences. This section is a place to think deeply about the book, to acknowledge your emotions and disagreements, to explore new ideas and challenge your personal assumptions. 12-20 sentences (about a page-long double space, size 12, normal margins)

2 discussion questions. These should be open‐ended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not fact‐based yes or no questions. !!! These questions you will use later in the semester when you will have to decide on a research question, so take your time coming up with good questions
An explanation of your reading process. How did this week’s reading go for you? Discuss specific sections that made you confused or questions that you have about the text. Point out strategies that helped you overcome challenges in your reading. Choose one or two of the following prompts to develop your ideas:

3-5 “significant words” from this particular reading—words that you feel are important to understand the text, or that you have decided to learn to develop your academic vocabulary. Define the words you choose and explain why you chose them.
