The new owner was starting to question just what he had
taken on. He knew very little about the Craft Show industry and had probably
been slightly arrogant in his thinking when he thought he would be able to turn
the company around quickly and easily. His knowledge of organisational
structure and culture was not as good as it could be, but he remembered from
his time at university that two of the key factors that impact on all areas of
business success are the formal structures (or lack of them) and the informal
culture (and the managers influence on this). He was wishing he had listened

been slightly arrogant in his thinking when he thought he would be able to turn
the company around quickly and easily. His knowledge of organisational
structure and culture was not as good as it could be, but he remembered from
his time at university that two of the key factors that impact on all areas of
business success are the formal structures (or lack of them) and the informal
culture (and the managers influence on this). He was wishing he had listened
to his lectures on this more carefully! Not knowing exactly where to start he
reflected on the many conversations that hed had with his senior management
team and was wondering how to interpret them to make sure that he got the best
out of them. He kept wondering if he was going to need to adopt one style of
management for all of the varying groups or if he was going to need to spend a
lot of time with each individual team leader. Observations Each team leader
gets paid on an event by event basis. They get paid a fixed fee for working on
an event (the more events they do the more they earn). They also get a free
trade stand (normally worth 400) to sell anything they want on the day. Each
team leader seems to be an expert on running the events and does not believe
that their team needs to change. Essentially they have spent most of their time
telling the new owner how everyone else is doing it wrong.
