Once you have selected your institution of interest, you should identify some kind of artifact of significance to that institution – some kind of written, visual, or multi-media “text” that carries importance within the institution you have chosen. For example, you could choose a school curriculum, an anti-bullying or anti-violence policy, guidelines for sexual assault reporting or mitigation, media advertisements, song lyrics or movies, business or corporate policies on parental leave, laws on equal pay, advice or self-help books, and so on.Paper Description:In the essay portion of this project, you will need to present a written analysis of yourchosen institutional artifact. This analysis should include relevant background on the history and significance of the artifact, and make connections to course concepts or material we’ve discussed in the class. More specifically, a successful paper should fulfill the following objectives:1. Introduce your institutional artifact. What “text” have you chosen to analyze? Wheredoes it exist, and who is it for? When was it created, and for what purposes? What makesthis artifact important to the institution it comes from?2. Analyze, critique, and/or explain the gendered messaging of the artifact. What doesthis artifact “say” about gender? How is gender presented, represented, or depicted? Howtraditional are those representations, or how much do they challenge traditionalunderstandings of gender? How is gender “disciplined” or constrained by the artifact?How does the artifact sanction “appropriate” or “inappropriate” gender?3. Relate your analysis to course concepts. How did course material inform yourunderstanding of the artifact? What ideas, perspectives, or theories helped you “read” theartifact for its gendered messaging? Make clear connections to specific ideas, terms,concepts, or perspectives here – define them clearly, use appropriate references tocourse readings, and explain the connections to your artifact concretely.4.
