Unit 2 Week 5 Discussion Board

Hello geographers,
This week, your discussion board involves folk and popular culture and how culture changes over time and over space (diffusion). After reading chapter 4, answer the following questions in your original discussion board post and reply to at least two other students posts with critical/supportive or insightful feedback. As you formulate your post, be creative, look for examples of old connections to ancestral cultures in the actions, beliefs and behaviors of today, you may be surprised to see how little our lives are from those that lived a millennia ago.
1. Compare and contrast the origin and diffusion of folk and popular culture. Considering the means by which popular culture diffuses, discuss the limitations on where there are cultures that will not have access to elements of popular culture.

Argue whether tribes like the Jarawa in India, or those in Brazil, Peru and Africa last as a folk cultures? Will it be assimilated into the popular industrial culture that is expanding into the tropical rain-forest for resources? Support your argument and describe what effort have or could be done to preserve them and what challenges they face as well. What are issues facing these unconnected or isolated tribes that he western world may or may not be able to solve?
3. How does the environment influence folk housing? Choose an example folk house style and discuss how its design relates to the local environment and where that style might be found today in a popular form.
4. Choose 2 examples of folk housing design from the textbook pages 128-129 and describe how it connect the culture to that specific environment
5. Imagine the Chamber of Commerce in your hometown wants to hire you to create a new town seal. Choose and describe a symbol or symbols that reflect the unique identity of your town. Is the cultural and/or physical landscape of your town distinctive enough to create a real sense of place?
