The body of the report should be between 500 and 1,000 words in length.
Consult the textbook, scientific journals, CDC websites, and other REPUTABLE, scientific sources of information. Do not use Wikipedia, as it is not reliable.
Your report should mention the following items, where possible. Not all items known for every pathogen. If you report detailed information about one aspect of your pathogen, you may need to omit or greatly summarize the information you provide about another part.

The history of the pathogen, including notable historical events it relates to and recent outbreaks. Not all pathogens have well-documented history. Make sure you do not confuse when a pathogen was first described with when it first started infecting people. For many pathogens, we do not know when it first started infecting people, since such events are prehistoric.
The year when this pathogen was discovered and/or when it was first isolated.
The diseases this pathogen commonly causes or is suspected to contribute to.
The current state of the pathogen’s impact upon world public health.
The pathogen’s mechanisms of pathogenesis, if known.  The amount of detailed information available on this topic varies from one pathogen to another. Sometimes, a full appreciation of the pathogen’s virulence factors is available. Sometimes the only information available is a description of which tissues are damaged by the pathogen.
The treatment and control measures used to combat the pathogen. Treatment refers to how a single person’s infection is medically interrupted. For example, antibiotics are a common treatment for bacterial infections. Control refers to the public health measures used to prevent more people from becoming infected. Effective treatments and control measures do not exist for all known pathogens. There is no need to list the names of antibiotics used for treatment unless they are unusual or significant.
Any other information that will help your instructor and/or peers understand the pathogen.
If your pathogen causes several different diseases, you may choose to emphasize one or two of them in your report, but you should at least mention the other diseases if they are common or medically important.

You may upload your report as a Word document (.doc or .docx), Adobe Portable Document (.pdf), or a text file (.txt). Alternatively, you may paste the text of your document into the textbox, instead of uploading the text of your document. Do not include images with your written report.
Your report must include a list of references and correct in-text citations for the sources that you use. A good rule of thumb for is to give credit to a source at the end of every sentence that contains information from outside sources. You may use the MLA format or any other widely accepted and clear format for in-text citations. Also include a list of your sources at the end of the report (References or Works Cited). The References or Works Cited page does not count towards the word limit of the report.
Your written report will be submitted electronically to Turnitin and checked for plagiarism. You must paraphrase and summarize the information you have gathered in your own words. Quotations should not be used at all for this assignment. In other words, do not use other people’s words verbatim. Rather, gather information into your notes and synthesize (create) a report from your own understanding of those notes.
