VIII. Assessing Your Adult Developmental Level

Directions. The following inventory is designed to assess
some of the qualities we discussed as important to being an effective
counselor. It is extremely important to answer honestly and to not fake good on
the instrument. The instrument has not been researched to show its validity and
should be used only to give you a rough sense of your conglomerate score on
these qualities. Use the following scale when responding to each item.

1. I believe that my opinions are almost always the correct
opinions. ___2. It is not unusual for people to seek me out to talk about their
problems. ___3. I find feedback from a professor enlightening. ___4. The
professor almost always has the answer. ___5. When making decisions, I
usually gather information rather than making quick decisions from my gut.
___6. Usually, when I try to listen to someone, I interject my point of view.
___7. The best type of learning takes place when the professor gives us the
facts. ___8. My church, synagogue, or mosque always espouses the right views.
___9. When listening, I usually know from the opening statement what that
person is going to say. ___10. I rarely research answers to tough questions.

based on his or her appearance. ___12. When considering important decisions, it
is best to defer to specific figures (e.g., parents) rather than gathering

___22. When in a work group, in an effort to complete tasks efficiently, it is
often necessary to make decisions with little or no collaboration. ___23. Most
clients need to be given strong advice and firm direction from the beginning of
the counseling relationship. ___24. The most important quality of the
counseling relationship is understanding how the client comes to make sense of
the world.

Scoring the inventory. For items 2, 3, 5, 13, 14, 17, 18,
20, and 24, give yourself 1 point if your response was a 5, 2 points if your
response was a 4, 3 points if your response was a 3, 4 points if your
response was a 2, and 5 points if your response was a 1. For all other
items, give yourself the number of points that you rated the item. The highest
score on this inventory is a 120. Higher scores (closer to 100 or more) are
likely an indication that you are more empathic, accepting, competent,
cognitively complex, and open to feedback. Reflect on what the score means to
you and write a short paragraph based on your reflection.
