Security The CEO of Soylent Green Inc. has heard that ransomware is the latest Internet threat and could close down Soylent Green operations and shipments. The CEO believes that security at the company is very lax and has employed your company to do a full review of network security. Soylent has a staff of around 100 people. Soylent has four offices and one manufacturing facility around the country in major centres. Two larger sites are multi-homed with several Internet connections. These give connections to other sites, external customers or both. You are to prepare a thorough report for Soylent. You should explain security concepts in a way that assumes little understanding on the part of Soylents CEO or other staff. The report should include aspects of a manifesto for the security culture at Soylent, explaining the needs of security, explanations of how security techniques solve or alleviate security concerns (security is rarely 100% effective), and specific recommendations. Start with enumerating and explaining the threats. What specific attacks might be mounted? Where do you see Soylent is vulnerable to these attacks? Explain the various security functions that are available. How are these implemented? Map the functions into specific security products (vendor independent, not mentioning specific CISCO or other products, so purchasing decisions can be left to Soylent). That is consider firewalls, intrusion detection systems, virtual private networks (VPN), Network Address Translation (NAT). Where could these be placed in Soylents network? What security functions do technologies such as Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), Secure Socket Layer (SSL), and HTTPS use? How could these be deployed at Soylent? Explain what the fundamental objectives of these devices and software are. How do they achieve their objectives? Highlight the differences between these devices. Soylent has systems for web information, web ordering, email, as well as internal administration systems. Where would you place these systems? Would you recommend a demilitarized zone (DMZ) and if so what can you say about system placement? You will need to source much of this information from the web. You must include all web references.
