Week 2 Forum: If possible, write a comment by Wednesday to allow others to respond to your comment. Provide at least two comments to the following questions.
William M. Tweed was, in many ways, the face of 19th century political corruption. He was the “boss” of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party political machine that dominated New York City for decades. Watch this clip from the 1999 Documentary Film on New York by Ric Burns and answer the questions below: (see below for instructions for viewing the film clip)
What things did Boss Tweed provide for his constituents? How did he understand Mass Politics? How much money did he take and how did he get it? If he was so corrupt, how did he stay in power? How did Thomas Nast’s cartoons depict Tweed? How does Tweed end up? Was the corruption his entire fault?
Instructions: Each student must provide at least two comments per week on the forum discussions. These can be either initial discussion points or responses to other’s comments. Please be respectful of other’s ideas and thoughts. Forum comments will be graded on the level of analysis and comprehension.
Digital Films: This week we will be using videos/films provided by “Films on Demand.” We will watch portions of a documentary about New York, Boss Tweed, and Machine politics in the 19th century. We will watch minutes 26:18-37:44 of the film.
