Writing Basic Arguments, Instructions

Overview
In this 750- to 1,000-word essay, you will create two different argumentative passages and analyze each of them.
Instructions
Refer to the instructions provided in part 1, “Writing Basic Arguments,” of Critical Thinking and Writing, found in the Essay folder.
The essay consists of two parts. For each part use the four-step process outlined in the “Writing Basic Arguments” section and what you learned from the discussions.
Please ensure that you include a bibliography of all material that you reference, and that you cite all material that you include in your essay that is not your own (Please use MLA format).
Part 1. Part 1. Using the descriptions and facts listed in Situation 1 below, write an inductive argumentative passage (approximately 150 words). Next state the argument, clearly indicating the premises and the conclusion (ensuring that you list any important implicit [hidden] premises that you didn’t explicitly state in your argument). In doing so, please number the premises and carefully separate them from the conclusion. For example:
1.  It has rained every Sunday for the last ten years.2.  The Denver Broncos play a game this Sunday. Therefore, it is likely that it will rain during the Denver Broncos game.
Lastly, analyze the argument (approximately 200–250 words), include a discussion of the following:

The strength and cogency of the argument
What you think makes this argument inductive versus it being deductive
What you think could have made the argument stronger
Name the type of inductive argument that you created. For example:

Prediction
Generalization
Analogical
Causal
Authority

Part 2. Using the descriptions and facts listed in Situation 2 below, write a deductive argumentative passage (approximately 150 words). Next outline the argument, clearly indicating the premises and the conclusion (ensuring that you list any important implicit [hidden] premises that you didn’t explicitly state in your argument). In doing so, please number the premises and carefully separate them from the conclusion.  Lastly, analyze the argument (approximately 200–250 words), include a discussion of the following:

The validity and soundness of the argument
What you think makes this argument deductive versus it being inductive
What you think could have made the argument better
Try to name the type of deductive argument that you created e.g. Modus Ponens, Modus Tollens, Syllogism etc.

Situation 1, for the inductive argument.
You go to the beach with your friend, and after applying a generous dose of sun block, you offer some to her. She declines. In response, you formulate an argument proving that people on the beach should normally use sun block. Some facts are as follows:

The Sun’s rays are generated deep inside the Sun by thermonuclear reactions.
Melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is often incurable.
Sand and water reflect the Sun’s rays.
The ozone layer is becoming depleted.
The Sun’s rays age skin, causing premature wrinkles.
Water often washes off sun block and sun screen.
Some rays bounce around inside the Sun for as long as 3000 years before reaching the surface.
Ozone blocks ultraviolet rays.
The Sun rotates once every 24 days.
There is no such thing as a healthy suntan.
The Sun’s rays cause skin cancer.
The Sun sustains all life on this plane.

Situation 2, for the deductive argument
You sign a one-year lease for an apartment and move in. On the first rainy day you discover that the roof leaks. To make matters worse, you had placed your new stereo under one of the leaks, and it will cost you $245 to have it repaired. You write a letter to the owner of the apartment arguing that she should fix the leaks and refund your $245. Some facts are as follows:

The owner had the roof repaired five years ago.
The stereo cost $2500.
The last apartment you rented had no leaks in the roof, although it did have a leaky faucet.
A local ordinance requires landlords to keep properties in good repair.
The owner owns four other apartment buildings.
It rains a lot in this city.
The owner was called before the housing commission last year to answer complaints from other tenants.
Sometimes the hot water runs out in the middle of your shower.
The apartment building is located close to a branch post office.
There are ten units in the apartment building.
You have an extensive collection of jazz CDs.
The prior tenant notified the owner that this unit had a leaky roof.
