What are some contributing factors that influence the burden of disease that Indigenous people carry? How do the structural and social determinants of health interact with health outcomes? 

A major factor that influences the burden of disease for indigenous is they are not able to follow proper health measures to prevent the spread (Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health [WBIIH], 2021). They do not have enough resources to do so, their homes and facilities are overcrowded resulting in no isolation for the sick or symptomatic population and inadequate clean water supply in order to wash hands (WBIIH, 2021). Washing hands is linked to having a major impact on transmission of viruses and diseases. These factors are directly linked to social determinants of health, and concluded poor living conditions, low income, high unemployment rate, lack of support and education (Naqshbandi Hayward et al., 2016). Primary care services main focus and priority is acute and episodic management not chronic diseases, resulting in higher adverse health outcomes (Naqshbandi Hayward et al., 2016). Health care professionals’ workload is overwhelming and acute needs come first, due to this hospital and ambulatory admissions are higher (Naqshbandi Hayward et al., 2016).

2. Based on the readings or other resources, what are some approaches that Indigenous people and communities are taking to address the burden of disease?

There are 650 communities for First nations and Inuit that are provided home and community care along with support for type II diabetes prevention and services by the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (Naqshbandi Hayward et al., 2016). Health branch provides health benefits for uninsured populations that includes vision, dental and prescriptions for registered Inuit and First Nations (Naqshbandi Hayward et al., 2016).
